Muslim School, Weligama, Sri Lanka, 2001
When I photographed this boy in 2001, Sri Lanka had been in a continuous state of civil war for 18 years. Weligama is one of the villages hit the hardest by the Indian Ocean tsunami three years later that killed more than 35,000 people in Sri Lanka.
I’ve always wondered if this little boy survived the tsunami. His school where I took this photograph was less than 100 meters from the sea.
These fishing spots are passed down from father to son.
